Description: The Senior Disk Storage Engineer is responsible for
centralized Tier 3 Sup****t of SunGard’s Managed Storage Service offering.
Additional responsibilities include: maintaining system availability,
performance analysis & optimization, managing capacity, service design,
storage implementation, proactive problem detection and resolution, systems
monitoring, recommendations for management, upgrade planning, process
do***entation, and training.
This position will establish a close working relation****p with Central
Operations (Tier 2), the local IDC team (Tier 1 sup****t), and SunGard’s
Sales teams to deliver complete storage solutions to end customers. This
position must possess exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal
communication skills. This position requires not only a high degree of
technical talent, but equally im****tant is the desire to work with people
and do whatever it takes to provide customers with exceptional service.
Finally, the successful Senior Engineer will require a high degree of
critical thinking and imagination around problem solving and solution
design.
Responsibilities
• Maintain System Availability and Capacity: Assume a leader****p role in
performing and maintaining the Storage System’s availability and capacity
to ensure customer SLAs are maintained.
• Provide World-Class customer sup****t and service. Ensure Cor****ate
Operations Team has developed accurate procedures and provide engineering
sup****t for SunGard’s Managed SAN.
• Develop Customer Solutions: Utilize knowledge and experience to provide
technical recommendations, design and implementation sup****t, to assist
customers in understanding and achieving the desired results. This includes
an in-depth understanding of operating systems and a working knowledge of
databases to administer best-in-class configurations including RAID group
configuration, LUN creation and host connectivity, and Storage Area Network
design, tape library and volume management, and integration with customer
environments.
• Product Development: Participate on cross-functional development teams
to produce SunGard products that meet or exceed customer expectations.
Represent SunGard field and cor****ate operations in these efforts, ensuring
that delivered products are fully operational and can be sup****ted by
engineers and operations technicians at multiple SunGard IDC sites around
the world.
• Problem Solving Sup****t: Act as an engineering escalation point for
SunGard’s Managed SAN Service. Do***ent and review trouble ticket re****ts
for continued improvement in process and training. Participate on the
Change Control Board (CCB) to ensure product standardization and adherence
to SunGard’s policies and procedures. Provide product patches, version
control and sup****t for hardware and software. Apply reason and experience
to systematically troubleshoot performance problems and develop appropriate
solutions.
• Implementation of Customer SANs: Deployment of customer requirements,
including implementation of network and monitoring solutions in accordance
with Service Level Agreements. May assist in the design and improvement of
such monitoring systems and build processes and procedures to sup****t their
use centrally and remotely.
• Product Evaluation: Evaluate disk, tape, and storage area network
products to assure that selected solutions provide maximum value for both
SunGard and SunGard’s customers.
• Disk Equipment Management: Oversee the operational readiness of
designated servers, routers, switches, disk servers, tape library systems
etc., based on the necessary customer solution requirements.
• Training/Mentoring: Promote the professional growth of the team.
Continually pursue op****tunities for personal career/training development.
As well as provide advanced training to Level 2 sup****t staff in an effort
to ensure that they are successful in providing the highest levels of
customer service they are capable of.
• Industry Awareness: Continually seeks industry (and share with
Management and Product Management) and market information and evaluate
market trends and how they apply to SunGard’s Managed Storage Service.
Qualifications / Skills Required
• College degree or equivalent work related experience with a minimum of
H.S Diploma or GED required.
• High degree of integrity, customer service and overall
professionalism with 7 to 10 years hands-on experience and customer sup****t
within a complex IT environment.
• Superior organizational/follow-through skills and ability to move
quickly and get things done. Strong attention to detail and ability to meet
deadlines. Results oriented, analytical, well organized.
• Must possess the ability to work effectively in a coordinating role
across multiple constituencies, a strong, open and collaborative style, a
customer-service orientation with a focus on excellence, outstanding
communications skills.
• A proven track record of sup****ting a technology organization in a
complex, and highly customer-focused environment. Must have a strong work
ethic, with a high degree of credibility and integrity.
• Proven track record in reviewing system do***entation and providing
recommendations and maintenance/ service requests for technical and
procedural changes.
• Experience articulating complex technical issues for a wide audience
of business leaders, IT professionals, and non-technical personnel in a
manner that is understandable.
• Proven track record of fostering teamwork; ability to work with
operations and sales teams. Maturity/experience to make necessary
trade-off between technical issue and commercial demands.
Technical Experience & Knowledge
• Must have a minimum of 5 years of Systems management and administration
with an in-depth understanding of operating systems, including Microsoft
Windows, Solaris, Unix/Linux – Certification(s) a plus. Scripting/system
programming a plus.
• Must have a minimum of 5 years of diverse SAN experience – Experience
with EMC Clariion, SYM/DMX, Brocade, McData a plus.
• Must have detailed knowledge of RAID, SCSI, SAN, and NAS.
• Must know basic IP security structures regarding disk and tape storage
