I just wanted to post a warning about working for Zhone Technologies
(based in Oakland) – your mileage may vary.
I believe that they treat people as mere resources and are almost
solely driven by the bottom line. It might good for investors (though
cutting corners will only get one so far) but bad for employees. They
drive their workers to work very hard, reward them little and yet are
quick with layoffs. They have persuaded half of an acquired company to
move from Texas to Boston only to lay them all off in less than 6
months. They have extended a job offer and after the candidate
accepted, withdrew the offer. They have publicly proclaimed to buy a
company for the technology and products but instead paid off the CEO
with millions, kept the ~$85 million cash for themselves and laid off
everyone except for a couple of people. It seems that the co-founders
rule the company with iron fists and are generally feared more than
respected by the employees.
