255905-604 Job Description BACKGROUND: School Health and Nutrition
addresses the critical health and nutrition factors that keep children out
of school and reduce their ability to learn effectively when in school.
Many school-age children in the developing world are heavily affected by
parasites, such as intestinal worms and malaria, and nutritional
deficiencies such as anemia. Healthier children stay in school longer,
attend more regularly, learn better and grow into healthier and more
productive adults. SHN program activities include deworming, micronutrient
(vitamin A and iron) supplementation, malaria treatment, and vision and
hearing screenings in schools. The program also works with communities to
increase access to safe drinking water, sanitary latrines and hand-wa****ng
facilities in schools. Children also acquire knowledge and adopt positive
habits that improve their health, nutrition and hygiene and prevent
HIV/AIDS.
Regular monitoring and evaluation of the programs is critical to ensuring
the success of the programs. KAP surveys are an im****tant component of a
comprehensive evaluation approach.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: Create model SHN KAP Questionnaire ? Review the
current list of KAP indicators and questions and KAP questionnaires used
in country offices. ? Carry out an internet search for standard (and where
possible tested) KAP questionnaires plus make inventory of questionnaires ?
Identify the strongest KAP questions for each SHN indicator and compile a
model KAP questionnaire. Provide additional questions that can be added as
needed in different countries and contexts. ? Review and revise guidelines
on drafting KAP questionnaires.
Assist with other SHN research needs which may include: ? Internet and
do***ent review to identify existing material on SHN in emergency or
post-conflict settings. ? Internet and do***ent review of existing
HIV/AIDS prevention education material for young children. ? Literature
review of impact of micronutrient supplementation (vitamin A, iron,
iodine) on school age children.
