Description: Intern for ECD and HIV/AIDS Tracking Code 255982-604 Job
Description Save the Children, in collaboration with the Consultative
Group on Early Childhood Care and Development, seeks an intern to sup****t
research and advocacy work on early childhood development and HIV/AIDS.

BACKGROUND: Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs are essential to
improving childrens physical, psychosocial and cognitive well-being at an
early age so they can attain their full potential in life. A lack of
attention to ECD, conversely, can have serious consequences not just for
the development of individual children but for their families and
societies as a whole. In the context of HIV/AIDS, ECD is even more
critical ? and more at risk. By 2003, AIDS had killed one or both parents
of an estimated 12 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa. About one out
of every eight of those millions of children was under six years of age.
The survival of these young children is precarious, and they face other
devastating consequences from the loss of parents or from being infected
with HIV, yet they have too often been left off the worlds HIV/AIDS
agenda. This omission is strikingly evident in Sub-Saharan Africa, where
the number of young orphans of AIDS is greatest. The pandemic is
increasing infant and child mortality figures that are already the highest
in the world and is further undermining fragile economies and societies.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: Save the Children (SC) and the Consultative Group
on Early Childhood Care and Development (CG) intend to carry out research
and advocacy that will call attention to the gap in the response for young
children, using the 2008 International AIDS Conference and related events
as platforms for action. Our activities will focus on three key themes:

1. What we know: The research and justification behind a focus on early
childhood development in the response to HIV/AIDS, with emphasis on the
links between brain development, ECD and human capital/economic
development. 2. What we do: How implementing agencies respond to the needs
of young children affected by HIV/AIDS with low-cost, scalable programs,
and how we measure our results. 3. How we advocate: The best approaches
for turning the research and programs on the ground into action for young
children at the policy level.

The intern will be expected to sup****t these efforts by conducting
background research and preparing two short briefs on • What we know?
and • What we do,? as well as providing input on a third brief about
• How we advocate.? The research will be conducted through a
literature review and potentially other methods, including interviews with
key informants.
