255994-604 Job Description The Save the Children Alliance is engaged in a
five year program called Rewrite the Future, to improve programming and
funding for education for children in conflict affected countries. Our
focus is on children in Afghanistan, Uganda, Haiti, Indonesia (Aceh),
Angola, Guatemala, Sudan, South Sudan and the Middle East. We are seeking
an intern to sup****t research and advocacy work on these issues.
BACKGROUND: Of the approximately 72 million children out of primary
school, nearly half live in countries that are or have been affected by
conflict. In order to reach EFA and MDG goals, we need to reach these
children. The countries in which they live are also least likely to get
overseas development aid as they often suffer from poor governance. Many
services are provided by international NGOs, but the funding for these, if
provided as humanitarian aid does not continue when new governments are
formed. Thus the children are doubly deprived iV by war and by the
collapse of their education services. Although international attention is
gradually being drawn to this issue, more work needs to be done to address
both issues of good programming in these difficult cir***stances, and to
provide financing for programs. We need to ensure that these children do
not lose out on years of schooling.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: Save the Children (US) is carrying out research
and advocacy that will identify good practice in program design for
children that can feed both into our direct service provision and into our
broader knowledge and advocacy outreach. Our activities will focus on three
key themes:
1. What we know: What are the good practices in this field in terms of
both : a) service delivery and implementation approaches; and b)
educational strategies that best target the needs of conflict affected
children. The emphasis will be on scalable and sustainable programming. 2.
How we advocate: The best approaches for turning this information into
policy recommendations for action for young children.
The intern will be expected to sup****t these efforts by conducting
background research, assisting in the preparation of policy and program
briefs, and taking part in advocacy events as needed. The research will be
conducted through a literature review and potentially other methods,
including interviews with key informants. It is possible that this
intern****p or part of it could be overseas.

We seek advanced degree holders or candidates with the following
qualifications: • X Strong research and writing skills and the
ability to summarize complex issues concisely and convincingly • X
Field experience in developing countries • X Technical or field
knowledge about education issues and preferably an interest in
conflict/crisis issues • X Ability to work efficiently under deadline
with minimal supervision • X Languages a plus.
