Software Design Engineer
Position Description: Design and develop softgoods products to meet
specified CSSS Suit Element requirements. Products may consist of
aerospace textile products and insulation and/or any sewn, heat
sealed, or adhesive bonded softgoods item including apparel, liquid
cooling garments, thermal/micrometeroid garments, and soft stowage
bags. The design engineer must be able to apply engineering principles
to the softgoods product. The individual will provide inputs to
designers, analysts, and drafters; select materials; layout general
configuration and select stitch and seam construction; prepare sewing
patterns and compile design packages; oversee fabrication of
development and critical flight hardware; and either perform or
sup****t development and certification testing. The engineer may be
called upon to provide cost estimates, bills of materials, and
schedules as related to the project, and sup****t proposals for new
work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop design concepts based on customer
requirements and concept trades. Includes interpretation and
application of design and performance specification. Develop design
packages and participate in design reviews and presentations. Lead or
sup****t design trades, studies, and analyses. Lead or sup****t the
development of detailed designs, including layout and patterning,
stitch and seam construction selection, material selection,
development and review of drawings and patterns, and development of
fabrication instructions. Assist in preparing test procedures,
including determination of pass/fail criteria. May sup****t development
and certification testing at the test facility or the customer=92s
facility. Assist in preparing test procedures, including determination

customer=92s facility. May develop, review, and update review cost
estimates and schedules for the design, development, certification,
and production of elements. Provide inputs for Proposals (technical
and budgetary).
Minimum Requirements Education: BS in engineering textiles, or a
relevant discipline with 2 to 20 years design experience, one year of
which is textile product related. Experience: Experience with
aerospace or other certification controlled textile products is
recommended. CAD assisted pattern making experience with sewn products
or garments is highly recommended. Skills & Knowledge: The design
engineer should have sewing skills, including, a knowledge of
industrial sewing and fabrication and stitch and seam construction.
Should also possess a working technical knowledge of textile
materials; especially high performance fibers like Nomex, Kevlar,
Teflon coatings, and fiberglass and MLI layups. Must be able to read
and interpret engineering drawings of textile assemblies and apply
descriptive geometry. Computer skills in PC should include Autocad,
ProE, and Microsoft Office, emphasis on Word and Excel.
