JOB TITLE: Principal Systems Scientist/Engineer

DESCRIPTION:
Description:
The successful candidate will perform control system analysis and design
for
Dynamic Optical Tags (DOTs) and Optical Combat Identification (OCIDS) free
space optical communication programs. These tactical programs require use
of
eye safe fiber lasers and high sensitivity optical receivers for
transmitting
and receiving coded information from interrogators to optical tags under
battlefield conditions. Specific tasks may include, Design the control
system
for laser beam stabilization and compensation for platform movement to
maintain
connectivity with optical tags. Conduct closed loop modeling of platform
movement, error signal processing, and compensation for a system using
optical
scanners, spatial light modulator (SLMs), Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems
(MEMS) beam steering components, etc. Specify and select components to
measure
and isolate handheld platform movement. Develop specifications to minimize
laser beam wander and spread through turbulent media using adaptive
optical
elements (AOE) and high speed converging algorithms such as stochastic
parallel
gradient descent (SPGD). Work with suppliers to develop the AOE and test
fixtures. Run lab and field tests to characterize the performance of the
laser
beam stabilization system. Analyze data and prepare re****ts. Must be able
to
work in the electro-optics lab. Must be able to perform well under cost
and
schedule constraints. Must work well within our multi-disciplined
engineering
team with coworkers of varied skills and experience. Some travel is
required.
Education & Experience Required:
US Citizen****p & the ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
MS in Electrical or Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field plus 6
years
of experience, or PhD with 3 years of experience. Proficient with
Microsoft
Windows, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Familiarity with MATLAB and DOORS
desired.
Familiarity with general-purpose lab equipment (scopes, signal generators,
optical measurement instruments, etc.)
